Social / Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Counseling for the Individual
Social Emotional Counseling is provided for all students experiencing difficulties dealing with relationships, personal concerns, or developmentally appropriate tasks. Individual counseling assists students in identifying problems, causes, alternatives, and consequences leading to informed decision making.
Individual counseling sessions may be arranged at the request of a student, parent, teacher, or other staff member. The counselor may speak with students about issues such as friendship, difficulty in the classroom, conflict resolution, anger, grief and loss, etc.
Social Emotional Counseling for the Small Group
Small groups are offered to students to support and enhance the development of personal and social skills and to support and promote educational success. Small groups provide not only additional social-emotional learning experiences, but also allow the students a chance to belong, a chance to express themselves, and a chance to benefit from the support of group members.
Exciting Things are Happening in the Counseling Department This Year!
What is Thrively?
“Thrively is a strengths-based learning platform that helps develop a thriving student and enables learners to acquire skills for success. Students will discover where their strengths and interests intersect with Career Pathways through interest-based exploration. They will also deepen their skill development across social-emotional and interpersonal skill areas both in and outside of the classroom. Students will showcase their strengths, intelligences, habits, skills, passions, and experiences in a Digital Portfolio.”

How will our department use Thrively?
We will be using Thrively to develop the whole student and bridge the gap between their social-emotional well-being and interpersonal skills with developing their career pathways and making decisions for their future. Basically, our students need to know themselves (their strengths and personalities) before they can choose a college or career path. We will start by taking several different strength and personality assessments with them and they will begin building their portfolio, which they will add to constantly here at SVA. We will also be using lessons that Thrively provides, such as lesson plans, videos, activities, journaling, etc.) on a vast number of topics- social-emotional, career exploration, learning skills, STEM, gifted and talented, special ed, and many more!
How can Thrively help the student?
One of the main benefits to students is that each student will have their own Digital Portfolio that showcases their strengths, likes, and accomplishments throughout their four years here at SVA. The way we explain it to the girls is it is like a LinkedIn profile for school, only it is not public, but shared with their teachers, counselors, admin and even parents, who will be able to see what kind of learner they are, their strengths and aspirations for the future, and anything they participate/volunteer in. This will not only help with them in their classes daily, but with their resumes, college recommendations, scholarship applications, awards, etc. They will have a “who they are” at their fingertips.
We have been testing this platform all summer and we were blown away…We hope you are too!
